Replicate virtual scene lighting in a physical studio in real time

A Brand-New Approach
to Lighting in Virtual Production

A Scientific Approach

CyberGaffer delivers the most precise real-world approximation of virtual scene lights in a physical studio through advanced mathematical calculations and calibration techniques.
The application computes the best possible real-world approximation and tunes your physical lights accordingly through ArtNet-DMX.
CyberGaffer software is an Unreal Engine plugin accompanied by a standalone application.
The plugin captures light information from the virtual scene and transfers it to the application.

Studio calibration

Once the light fixtures in a studio are installed and connected via DMX — ArtNet, they need to be calibrated.
To calibrate the studio, we position a special calibration sphere and run a calibration sequence.
The sequence is recorded on camera and then processed using CyberGaffer software. During this process we calibrate everything: lights, camera and optionally background screen.
During light fixture calibration, we create a fully accurate physical lighting model for the studio.
This model considers not only the positions of the light sources and the direct light they emit but also accounts for secondary reflections — how light bounces of the studio’s floor and objects, and how these reflections contribute to the overall illumination of the calibration sphere.

Lights calibration

One of the key steps in calibration is the camera linearity calibration. During this process, a LUT is generated for each specific camera instance. This ensures that all subsequent calculations are performed on linear data, enabling consistent results even when shooting with multiple cameras from different manufacturers.

Camera calibration

When shooting in LED volumes, the color of a pixel from Unreal Engine is displayed on the LED-screen with specific color characteristics and is captured by the camera with its specific color sensitivity.
CyberGaffer software calibrates the background screen colors based on the specific camera being used and calculates a matrix 3x3 to create an OCIO config and transform the colors from Unreal Engine.

Background screen calibration

This step is essential if you want to add AR effects during post-production, ensuring that the colors captured by the camera and the AR effects from Unreal Engine are perfectly aligned.

What is needed to run CyberGaffer

CyberGaffer software controls light fixtures via ArtNet (DMX). If your light fixtures only support DMX, use a DMX-to-ArtNet converter.
Our software supports a full range of controllable lights, including Bi-Color, RGBW, RGBWW, and RGBACL.

Hardware setup

It is recommended to place the light sources around the area where the actor will be during the shoot, arranged in an orb formation.
To calibrate the studio, a special calibration sphere is required— a hardware component of the CyberGaffer solution provided by our team.
CyberGaffer software is an Unreal Engine plugin accompanied by a standalone application.
The CyberGaffer UE plugin is available on the Unreal Engine Marketplace.

The library of light fixture profiles

Virtual Production imposes additional requirements on light fixtures that were not relevant in traditional production. To stream lighting information in real-time, the different aspects are crucial: response time, no smoothing, actual DMX value range, power limits, etc.
We work directly with light manufacturers to test the lights and create a library of profiles for various light fixtures, ensuring that each specific fixture model operates correctly and in the most efficient way.
If your light fixture model is not in the library, you can use a generic DMX-controlled lamp profile, though it may not be optimized for your particular model.
