What is CyberGaffer?

CyberGaffer enables you to replicate virtual scene lighting in the real world.

CyberGaffer is a set of plugins for 3D software (Unreal Engine, Unity, Blender) accompanied by a standalone application.
The plugins capture light information from the virtual scene and transfer it to the application.

The application computes the best possible real-world approximation and tunes your physical lights accordingly.
In this video we intentionally skipped any manual color grading to demonstrate the "out-of-the-box" results.

How It Works

Place the Calibration Sphere in the center of the studio.
Run the automatic calibration process.
Install RGBW lights in your studio and connect them via DMX — ArtNet.

Setup

The plugins capture light information from the 3D software.
The application tunes the physical lights in the studio.

Usage

Open your virtual scene in 3D software.

More details

Once the lights in your studio are installed and connected via DMX — ArtNet, you need to calibrate it. During calibration, CyberGaffer gathers information about the placement of light sources and secondary reflections.

For example, frontal light not only illuminates the talent from the front but also reflects off the green screen, casting a greenish light from behind. All such reflections are taken into account when calculating the lighting.
In addition to lighting information, the app computes LUTs for linearizing your camera's image. For calibration, you'll need a calibration sphere placed in the center of the studio on a tripod.

We then record a video with this sphere while the app plays the calibration sequence, including different channels of lamps and their combinations. The resulting video is uploaded to the app, and the studio is ready to go.
